On-demand testing can be defined as testing a learner when they are ready rather than at a fixed time, such as happens with driving tests and graded music examinations. Ofqual has now published two reports into the use of on-demand testing in examinations and assessments.

There has been much debate around the transfer arrangements to post primary education in Northern Ireland. With the demise of the 11 plus transfer test, there is still debate on what will replace it. First Minister Peter Robinson has said that he favoured computer adaptive testing (CAT), which looks at a child's ability over a longer time period.

The regulatory principles for e-assessment address developments in e-assessment activity, where regulation is needed to take account of the specific nature of this mode of delivery, whilst ensuring flexibility to encourage innovation.

It seems obvious, but is seldom remarked, that students are being obliged to do something that they never do or need to do in real life: write with a pen for two or three hours non-stop. Nobody does that any more. The teachers and academics who will be marking the papers don't do it. Professional writers – novelists, playwrights, journalists – don't do it. Pens are for postcards, diary entries, phone messages, making notes, and doodling in boring meetings. For extended, continuous writing, we use computers.
